Hi to all fellow caregivers,

I have been indirectly and directly caring for my parents over the past 11 years.  My Dad had COPD and my Mother was the primary caregiver for him and had the support of Hospice in the last year of his life October – 2005.  My mother had battled colon cancer and liver cancer (the reason my husband and I had them come live with us and our 3 children) and was cancer free for approximately 10 years.  Those were the years she was available and healthy enough to help take care of my Dad as well as develop a great relationship with her grandchildren.

My mother developed breast cancer a year after my father died.  She endured another surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy in the year 2007.  I have been progressively helping her more and more since January of 2008 when her mobility, heart and lungs became weakened and she was then diagnosed with congestive heart failure and COPD.  She fought a brave battle to live and she was a blessing in our lives.  She died last week (July 28, 2008).

My heart goes out to all who take on the role of primary caregiver to a loved one.  Jean Fogelberg, you are my hero for sharing your story and helping to support those who give care to others.  I was so deeply touched by Dan’s music, his brave battle to live life as fully as he could while dealing with cancer,  and your love and support of him.  I am thankful to be on the living legacy newsletter list because these connections have helped me during these tough summer months.  I have taken to heart the encouragement to exercise, eat healthy and take care of myself.

I look forward to hearing more stories and educating others to the importance of caring for oneself while caring for a loved one.

Peace and Strength to All,

Sally N
