LYRICAL QUOTES

“The time for us to say goodbye is near
The day I hoped would never come is here
Though many hearts are broken, we must somehow carry on
Cause I think you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
I thought my life was over when we met
So little to remember, so much to forget
Though it was you who saw me through the darkness to the dawn
Still I think you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
I’m a modest man
And it hurts me to say these things to you
But after all we’ve been through, it’s the least that I can do
So instead of just ‘goodbye’, I’ll say ‘so long’
And as for the light by which you see me, leave it on
I’m a better man than I was before
Knowing you has made me strong
Still I think you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone
I’m a better man than I was before
Knowing you has made me strong
And I sure am going to miss you when I’m gone
Yes I sure am going to miss you when I’m gone.”
“I see my folks
They’re getting old
I watch their bodies change
I know they see the same in me
And it maks us both feel strange
No matter how you tell yourself
It’s what we all go through
Those eyes are pretty hard to take
When they’re staring back at you.
Scared you’ll run out of time.”

A sweet lady I am working with on a rehabilitation unit who desperate wants to return home gave the following to me. Due to vascular dementia and mental health issues, her physicians and family do not believe she will be safe because she lives alone. Hummm…..that is my philosophy so should we allow it to be hers?

“MOTTO TO LIVE BY: Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, latte in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO HOO, what a ride!!!!!”

Hi Lynn, yes, I so agree with that one too! I think the author is unknown on it. Here’s another good one with a similar message that I like a lot also.
Twenty years from now you will be more
disappointed by the things you didn’t do
than by the ones you did.
So throw off the bowlines
Sail away from safe harbor
Catch the trade winds in your sail
Explore, Dream

It’s the saddest thing when they’re not happy and they want to go home. Hopefully, she’ll get more used to it where she’s at and start to think of it more like a vacation from home with people who are there for her every need! I’m so thankful that my mom is past that stage and seems to be quite satisfied with her surroundings. Her great attitude has helped me with my guilt level immensely. I continue to be so proud of her in so many ways like how well she’s adapted to her condition. She’ll always be an amazing woman in my eyes.

I was so saddened and so very down last week. Something unknown encouraged me to watch my DVD of “Greetings from the West” at the end of the week. There, alone in my bed at 2:30 am, I laid and right before I drifted off to sleep, I heard the real beauty in “There’s a light in the depth of the darkness”. My soul was instantly soothed. Though it brought tears to my eyes, they were tears of hope – something I hadn’t held within myself for quite a while. Lyrics and quotes can be so enpowering and I am ever thankful for listening to that inner instinct that made me listen to something I so needed to hear.

Cindy – “There’s a light in the depth of the darkness” is a phrase that has helped me get through many tough times. It is wonderful to have Dan in my head singing when I am in the depths of despair. And too, my soul is soothed, with tears of hope. Always listen to your heart. It will never let you down. Happy Valentines Day Cindy! Joan

Thank you, Joan! You are so right and it is so nice to hear someone else say that Dan’s music “soothes” them, because that is exactly the way I feel and the reason I still listen to all of it quite frequently. Dan certainly believed in the heart and its great depth, as well as the legacy that love and the heart leave and how it lives on beyond us. That is ever so apparent in this beautiful website that Jean has created in his memory with all the wonderful stories of bravery and strength when you thought that there was none to be had. Dan would be so proud…..correction……he IS so proud.

I particularly love the Fogelberg quote from “Nexus”: “So wealthy the spirit who knows its own flight; Stealthy the hunter who slays his own fright; Blessed the traveler who journies the length of the night”. “The Innocent Age” has always been my favorite Fogelberg CD. I think of it as a tale of life ~ from the cradle to the grave ~ in many ways and this quote captures the concept of the entire CD so very well.

All alone I didn’t like the feeling
All alone I sat and cried
All alone I had to find some meaning
In the center of the pain I felt inside
All alone I came into this world
All alone I will someday die
Solid stone is just sand and water, baby
Sand and water, and a million years gone by
I will see you in the light of a thousand suns
I will hear you in the sound of the waves
I will know you when I come, as we all will come
Through the doors beyond the grave
All alone I heal this heart of sorrow
I can only live this day
Flesh and bone my life’s bursting towards tomorrow
And the love you send my heart still finds it’s way

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

Every time I’ve listened to Dan F’s song, “A Growing Time”, I’ve been reminded of a different song. And I finally figured out today that it is this classic Byrds song

And if wishes were like horses we would ride
Like the light unto the shadow
And the blossom to the thorn…….
“A Growing Time” by Dan Fogelberg
Coming back from a funeral Friday and those words ran thru my head, yes, how if wishes were like horses, I could just ride, ride, ride like the wind. I always can find something by Dan that will soothe me. How awesome that we have these beautiful lyrics and music forever.

We’ve got to let go of the things that we’ve got
We can’t take ‘em with us, and we just get one shot

And we’ll take up where we left off
When we all meet again.

And it’s hard to go down easy;
And it’s hard to keep from cryin’;
And it’s hard to lose a lover
In the early part of autumn.
“Go Down Easy”…High Country Snows- Daniel Grayling Fogelberg…
I still to this day tear up when I hear this song or see the video. One of my favorite songs from a fantastic album. I’ve been a fan of Dan Fogelbergs music since forever
My oldest sister Patricia got married in May of 1981, I was 9 years old then. Her wedding song was “Longer” and I remember dancing along to it. Dan’s music has always been a part of my life growing up. My other older sister Debbie and her husband Rob always had his music playing while I was growing up. I remember playing his records on my player and strumming along to his beautiful music on my guitar (I still do often)
My father was diagnosed with a non-operable brain tumour on November 21 2000,he was 66 years old. I watched a man full of life and as strong as a 20 year old slowly loss the battle of life. My Mom and my 7 brothers and sisters and I and there husband and wives took care of my dad at home till God decided to take his tired body home to heaven. My Dad passed away March 22,2001 aged 67. There are no words to describe the amount of greif and pain one can endure going thru such. I feel for everyone on this page and you Jean for what you went thru. I sometimes cant believe Dan is no longer on this earth making the beautiful music he always made. I find myself crying whenever I listen to his music. Thank you so much for this website. What a true pleasure to see you responding to everyones posts and stories , wow .. that is fantastic! God Bless your heart
Stay strong in heart and mind and soul always … and always cherish the moments you shared with Dan… Thank you so much for letting me share my thoughts.

Hi Kristine, oh my gosh, only 4 months after the diagnosis – not much time to accept and prepare. It must have been like a tornado in your lives. I love that your whole family cared for him – it must have given him such comfort, and he must have been so proud of the family he’d created. Thanks for sharing. ~ Jean

“I’ll remember you too clearly
But I’ll survive another day
Conversations to share
When there’s no one there
I’ll imagine what you’d say
I’ll see you in another life now, baby
I’ll free you in my dreams
But when I reach across the galaxy
I will miss your company
Company
I’ll be looking for company
Look and listen
Through the years
Someday you may hear me
Still crying for company.”
